Sherbrooke as a Day Trip from Coaticook

Sherbrooke is the city of the Eastern Townships: two universities, a real downtown, and the closest thing to Coaticook that can fill a rainy day indoors. It is 35 minutes away. That makes it a good day out from a chalet, and it makes a chalet a workable base for families visiting a student. Here is how to spend the day, and when a city hotel is the smarter booking.

Getting there

Sherbrooke is about 35 km (22 miles) north of Coaticook, roughly 35 minutes by car. Lennoxville, the borough where Bishop's University sits, is on the way, about 30 minutes out. Winter roads and border waits change the math. The border only matters here if you are combining Sherbrooke with a run into Vermont, but snow matters from December to March, so give yourself slack for anything with a start time.

A downtown walk: the murals

Sherbrooke has painted its history on its walls. The Sherbrooke Murals Tour is a circuit of large trompe-l'œil frescoes downtown. The regional tourism board counts 18 of them, each on a theme from the city's past, with panels that explain who and what you are looking at.

Two details make it work with children. The painters hid small elves and ladybugs in the murals for kids to find. And there is a digital layer, Muralis, that animates the walls on a phone. A printable guide, a podcast and a quiz are on the murals' own site, which the tourism page links to.

It is free, it is outdoors, and you can do as much or as little of it as your group's legs allow. Start downtown and give it 90 minutes.

Lac des Nations

The Promenade du Lac-des-Nations is a 3.5 km multi-use loop around a small lake in the middle of the city. The tourism board rates it easy and says to allow about an hour on foot. It is flat and paved, which makes it the rare outing that works for a stroller, a grandparent and a kid on a scooter at once. There are two rest stops along the way.

The loop starts at the Marché de la Gare, the public market at Place de la Gare. In 2026 its outdoor market ran on Fridays and Saturdays from June into October. Dates shift each year, so check the market's site. It is a sensible place to buy supper for the chalet before you drive back.

Two museums for a wet day

• The Musée de la nature et des sciences de Sherbrooke is the family pick, with a permanent collection and changing exhibitions. Hours and rates are on its site.
• The Musée des beaux-arts de Sherbrooke is the fine arts museum, downtown.

Both are small enough to do in a couple of hours, which leaves time for lunch. The city's tourism office, Sherbrooke Vibrante, lists restaurants and what is on. Tourism Eastern Townships notes that downtown has a good number of microbreweries and terraces, and the city has an active concert calendar, with the Théâtre Granada and the Université de Sherbrooke's cultural centre as the main halls.

Visiting a student: Bishop's and the Université de Sherbrooke

Sherbrooke has two universities. Bishop's University is an English-language university in Lennoxville, on the Coaticook side of the city. The Université de Sherbrooke is the large French-language one.

Families come for move-in, for convocation and for the odd weekend of feeding a student properly. Some thoughts on where to sleep:

A hotel in Sherbrooke is the better choice if you are one or two people, you are in town for a single night, or the weekend is built around campus events that run late. You will want to be ten minutes from the residence, not thirty-five.

A chalet near Coaticook makes sense if the whole family is coming, including the siblings, the grandparents and the dog, and you want the student to leave campus for a couple of days. A house gives you a kitchen for the big meal, a table for everyone, and somewhere to talk that isn't a hotel lobby. From the Coaticook area, Lennoxville is about half an hour away.

For big university weekends, book whatever you choose well ahead. Rooms in a university town tend to go early on those dates.

The house, briefly

La Villa Foresta is a five-bedroom, two-bathroom chalet in the Coaticook area that sleeps 12. It has a modern kitchen with an island, a bright living room, a covered deck, a fire pit with s'mores supplies, board games and puzzles, and a coffee and tea station. Dogs are welcome and get their own beds and treats. It is a new listing in 2026, hosted by Jillian, an Airbnb Superhost.

What it is not: in the city. After a day in Sherbrooke you drive back into the countryside, and the evening is a fire and a board game, not a bar. Whether that is a drawback depends entirely on the student.

Pairing Sherbrooke with the rest of the region

A good two-day plan from the Coaticook area: one city day in Sherbrooke, and one country day. For the country day, North Hatley and Lake Massawippi are about 30 minutes from Coaticook, and the gorge, the footbridge and the dairy bar in Coaticook are closer still. Compton, with its orchards and its national historic site, is on the road between Coaticook and Sherbrooke, so it fits into either day.
